St. Ann School 8th grader Catherine Green placed third in the nation in the 2011 Catholic Daughters of America Competition for her essay entitled “The Light Others Give to Me.” Last spring, Catherine won first place at the local level for her essay, which was a moving tribute to her grandmother. The essay went on to receive a third place award at the national level. Principal Mary Therrell recognized Catherine’s accomplishment at the school’s Thanksgiving mass and Grandparents’ Day assembly on November 23, 2011.

Catherine wrote the essay as part of a Language Arts Enrichment class assignment. The class, taught by Mrs. Leslie Healy, is a unique writing program offered to all students in grades three through eight at St. Ann School. The class expands beyond students’ regular Language Arts classes, and seeks to enrich their writing in cross curricular essays, creative works such as poetry and plays, and homework and test assignments.

Congratulations to Catherine for her fine work!

Principal Mary Therrell and preschool teacher Toni Marchese recently attended a ceremony to receive a plaque in recognition of the school’s designation as a 2011 Blue Ribbon School.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools where students achieve at very high levels and/or where the achievement gap in narrowing. The Program sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of achievement. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is part of a larger U. S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.

St. Ann School applied for eligibility for the program under the “exemplary high performing schools” criteria.

In addition to the core curriculum, our students all attend “special” classes — Computer, Library, Spanish, Art and Physical Education. They attend Enrichment Assemblies throughout the year and can choose to join extracurricular activities, such as Battle of the Books, Band and CYO Sports.
