Hi. My name is Marcela Inchauspe de Cortes and I am the computer class teacher and technology coordinator at Saint Ann’s.
I meet with students from Preschool through 8th grade, once a week. Preschool class is 30 minutes while the rest of the classes are 45 minutes in length.
In PreK we learn about the external and internal computer hardware. We greet all the computer parts every single class as part of our routine. We learn mouse skills and later some keyboarding skills. We also learn how to traverse application software like ABCMouse. We reinforce the work students do in their homeroom by playing a digital version of it. We use Legos to build simple structures and learn Computer Literacy by watching a puppet show whose characters are: a browser, the internet and the World Wide Web. We also listen to a Powerpoint presentation titled, “Motherboard and Her Children”.
In Kindergarten we start the year by using ABCMouse to review some classroom concepts and practice mouse and keyboarding skills. We learn about Hardware Input and Output devices. Later on we gain familiarity with application software like Word and Excel. We learn about the main keys on the keyboard and start our typing experience. We use DanceMat from BBC to start sharpening our keyboarding skills. We learn how to traverse our school intranet to find the websites we need.
In First and Second grades we focus more and more on sharpening our skills on keyboarding, desktop publishing and basic file management (File Save/Open). We do this to better prepare for the 3rd grade Language Arts Enrichment program which requires some level of finger dexterity and the ability to write student work mostly on Word and save it to a network folder. In addition, we learn about photography, computer literacy, do basic research and have time to play with our favorite programs such as Scratch, Python Turtle and Pivot Stick Figure, which all promote computer science concepts.
In Third, Fourth and Fifth grades we start the class by doing 10 minutes of typing practice followed by work on a specific project. The content of the projects varies and is tied to subject areas covered by the Homeroom teacher or Specials. Throughout the year students learn the following skills: research and information retrieval; desktop publishing using applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint. In addition, they learn application integration; computer science concepts such as “binary numbers”, algorithms (Search and Sort) and programming applications like Python Turtle and Scratch. They all participate in the Code.org initiative during “Computer Sciences Week” in early December.
In Middle School, students continue to practice typing. They all have school Google Accounts and they use them to access the Google for Education Application package. It includes the following apps: Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Presentation, Google Forms and Google Classroom. The Gmail app is disable as well as their access to YouTube. In addition they share a cart of 26 Chromebooks which is housed in the Science Lab. At this level students start to master skills in Computer Literacy; Desktop Publishing; Multimedia Applications; Application Integration; Research, Information Retrieval and Data Analysis. Students create simple websites in HTML; learn about many computer science concepts by participating on “out of the box” lessons from Computer Science Unplugged and increase their coding experience. Most of the lessons are communicated to them via Google Classroom. This platform allows them to access material, resources and submit assignments from anywhere including home as long as they have a browser like Chrome and Internet connectivity. Google Classroom is used in LAE, Computer Class and Spanish.
